Matos, the 4th-youngest active MLB player, was hitting .398 in his 24 games at Triple-A before getting called up this week.

In the San Francisco Giants clubhouse, there is one traditional celebration for a rookie’s big moment, be it a first hit, a first win, a first home run: an everything shower. As in, grab anything and everything — beer, ketchup, peanut butter — and douse the young man of the hour. It’s true. The Giants’ youth movement has given the clubhouse much to celebrate and Zaidi plenty to be proud of.

Matos was called up to take the place of Mitch Haniger, the Giants’ highest-priced free-agent pick-up who was hit by a pitch Tuesday night and fractured his forearm. Haniger had surgery Thursday in Los Angeles, which Zaidi confirmed was successful. While there remains no timeline for his return, Zaidi said the Giants are hopeful Haniger can make it back by the end of the season.

At age 21 , Matos became the youngest Giants rookie to debut since Madison Bumgarner in 2009 and the youngest position player since Connor Gillespie in 2008 . Around the majors, there are only three active players who were born after him : Miami’s Eury Pérez , Atlanta’s A.J. Smith-Shawver and St. Louis’ Jordan Walker .

In one six-game series, Matos recorded hits in all six games, multiple hits five of them and at least three hits in four of them. If you went to see any of Matos’ games at Triple-A, there was a one-in-three chance you saw a three-hit night. He did it eight times. Matos was given a directive to improve his pitch selection and appears to have taken that to heart. He has walked more times than he has struck out this year, and his 8.0% strikeout rate ranks fifth among all minor leaguers .
