Vistra Energy, a private company, has owned the land and leased the portion that contains the park to Texas at no cost since 1971. The 5,000-acre swath of land has been under contract with Dallas-based developer Todd Interests for more than a year and finally closed last week so now Todd Interests owns the land and the state’s lease is up next week.The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department never bought the land, which was first listed for sale in 2021.
The department recently made a $25 million offer to buyout Todd Interests’ contract but that deal never came to fruition., a golf course and country club.The 5,000-acre Freestone community south of Dallas will include an community center called The Point.That’s yet to be determined. State officials have remained adamant that they aren’t backing down despite the land officially being sold to the private developer.
TPWD commissioners have a special-called meeting scheduled for Saturday morning where they’ve said they’ll be discussing options to condemn the 5,000 acres, which includes more than just the 2,400-acre portion that contains Fairfield Lake State Park. In recent months, Texas lawmakers have talked about possibly using eminent domain to get the land back. These laws allow the government to take private land for public use. The meeting this weekend could be a step toward doing so.
