Octavian Rosales drops off a Christmas tree to be recycled at Central Neighborhood Repository on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022 in Houston. Christmas tree drop-off recycling locations are located throughout Houston. The final day for drop offs is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Recycling is also available for live Christmas trees through the city's yard waste curbside collection program.
Residents are encouraged to recycle live trees once they are taken down for the holiday season. The trees can be repurposed for mulch and other landscaping materials, Solid Waste Management Department officials said. Brent McWatre, general manager of Living Earth in Missouri City, said around this time of year they get hundreds, if not thousands, of recycled trees. He said the trees do not create a huge boost of volume for them because they are generally not too large.There are 24 drop-off spots, which opened Tuesday and will accept trees through Jan 31.
The curbside collection is not available for those living in multifamily units, like apartment complexes.
