“We’re seeing a pitcher who is really back to the way he was throwing a couple of years ago,” Young said late Friday afternoon. “The fastball is electric. He’s just been really, really tough to hit. We’re excited. We think he fills a need in our bullpen in terms of swing and miss and being able to pitch leverage situations at the back of the bullpen.”
“It was surprising at first [that he missed the workout], a little shocking, but after the shock wore off, when you add everything up, it’s not surprising,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said at the time. “There’s some questions about whether he’s been in all-in or not for a little while. He’s maintained verbally that he’s in, but at times, actions don’t match those words.
The numbers and performance certainly underscore that he’s been reliable on the mound. Chapman had a 2.45 ERA in his 29.1 innings with the Royals. In nine June innings, he allowed just one hit and one earned run while strike, he struck out 20. He wasn’t closing regularly in Kansas City, but was pitching regularly in high-leverage, late-inning situations. Or at least as regularly as one could for a team with the second-worst record in the majors.
