NEW YORK — For more than 20 minutes on Wednesday, ahead of another loss during the worst first half of a season that money can buy,Instead of the typical long table and basic draping seen in sterile press conferences, Cohen clasped his hands at an orange high-top that bore the Mets logo. He sat in a brown swivel chair that resembled a baseball mitt. He wore his blue Mets cap. Underneath it all, Cohen showed up as a responsible owner.It was by design.
Cohen carried with him the awareness that a sizable segment of Mets fans wanted him to operate with petulance and fire his top decision-maker — and that people within the game would also be curious about how he’d respond. But he was never going to feed into the perception of a billionaire gone mad because he knows the repercussions. He knows that such behavior does way more harm than good toward his overall plans — which are partly dependent on attracting elite talent to his organization.
Nevertheless, the Mets’ front office remains unsettled. Cohen wants an experienced president of baseball operations able to complement his vision of what it takes to become a sustainable winner. He talks often about pitching development and a deep farm system, two things he didn’t inherit. “I’m confident we will make the best decisions we can given the information we have,” Cohen said in a message toregarding his confidence in Eppler, especially given the potential magnitude of decisions before the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
