Part asshole, part comic relief—the Roy family’s youngest sibling Roman may be the most likable sociopath on current television.
—which follows the dynastic maneuvering of a media empire—the British writer took a cue from actual royal family dynamics. Logan Roy , the self-made mastermind of entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco, is essentially the show’s fictional king. Logan’s heir apparent—as of the pilot, at least—is Kendall Roy , Logan’s firstborn son from his second marriage, who operates with the seriousness of a prince poised to inherit life-changing responsibility.
Even Roman’s coldhearted father, Logan—who essentially breaks his children’s spirits for sport—feels bad for the kid, crossing the field to shake his hand and commend his “magnificent effort.” But instead of Roman being punished for his brazen display, he is insulated by his family’s wealth; a Roy staff member does damage control by offering the boy’s family a gift in exchange for their NDA-bound silence.
There may not be consequences for Roman’s bad behavior, but there have been a few for Culkin. Recently, a drunkenviewer approached the actor and announced, “I kind of want to punch you right now.” Culkin tried to handle the situation with grace—assuring her, “I’m quite different [from the character].” But, Culkin confessed, “It wasn’t the first time someone told me I have a very punchable face.
As season one progressed, fine-tuning that palpable familial dynamic became the most enjoyable aspect of the role for Culkin. “I know the show’s called, but to me it’s not really about this big media company and who it’s going to be passed on to—or how rich they are how much influence or power they have,” he said. “To me, what’s compelling are these characters, and the family.”
