There are six long weeks left before Boris Johnson is replaced as Prime Minister
– have been eliminated across the past fortnight in repeated ballots of the party’s 358 MPs.
Mr Sunak came top in the fifth and final ballot of MPs on Wednesday with 137 votes, with Ms Truss in second on 113.The end of voting by MPs’ marks the start of voting by Tory members – and a new phase of the contest for Mr Sunak and Ms Truss. Starting next week, they will travel around the country for twice-weekly hustings, where they will be grilled by Tory members.
All of the events will be open to the media, although there will be no questions from journalists or members of the public, as the 175,000-strong Tory membership are now the only ones who can decide who will be their next leader – and the next prime minister.
