Here’s what happened after Terminator Genisys, how it changed the Terminator timeline, and what the Terminator Genisys sequels would have been like.
Terminator 5 introduced multiple new Terminator timelines, raising the question of what happens after Terminator Genisys. Designed as a reboot that would reignite the Terminator franchise with a new, reimagined version of the story, Terminator Genisys does not necessarily contradict or retcon any of the previous Terminator movies.
Presumably, Genisys-Skynet was now running on low power following the base's destruction, hence the red lights. Still, Terminator Genisys’ post-credits scene confirmed that Genisys-Skynet's true core had not been destroyed and that the fight was far from over. In the original Terminator Genisys timeline, the one before Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 is sent to protect Sarah Connor in 1973, the Resistance defeats the machines in 2029.
Therefore, just the fact that the evil John Connor was sent back in time by Skynet already changed the timeline, all but guaranteeing that the war between humans and machines would now go differently. Skynet’s goal was to have the Genisys operating system ready to go in 2017, which the heroes prevented.
