“Black women like myself are already overburdened. We should not have to repeatedly show up to ensure that already-passed legislation … is actually carried through,' Chinenye Nkemere said during the public comment portion of Monday’s City Council meeting.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Black Women and Girls Commission doesn’t exist yet -- nine months after Mayor Justin Bibb and City Council formally agreed to create the body.
“Every single community meeting I attend, every Zoom meeting I am a part of -- I am asked ‘What is taking so long?’ and ‘Who are the impediments?’” Chinenye Nkemere said during the public comment portion of Monday night’s City Council meeting. She continued: “Many in our community -- Black women who are at the forefront of our community -- are getting disillusioned. They’re being left behind in this process in their own city.”
The pair also called on city leaders to put money behind the commission’s efforts. Nkemere called for “substantive funding.”
