Boris Johnson has urged Rishi Sunak not to abandon legislation he introduced on Northern Ireland's post-Brexit trade
has made an intervention over Brexit, warning Rishi Sunak against abandoning legislation that would unilaterally override parts of post-Brexit trading arrangements.
But Mr Johnson has warned Mr Sunak that it would be a “great mistake” to take a deal that would kill off or dramatically water down his Northern Ireland Protocol Bill. The controversial legislation, introduced by Mr Jonhson last June, would tear up parts of the Brexit deal without agreement from the EU and permit the free flow of goods to Northern Ireland.
Mr Sunak is reportedly hoping to smooth over relations with the EU by taking a less confrontational approach, with a deal likely to mean the bill is no longer needed in its current form.One of the priorities for the Brexit deal between the UK and EU was that theThe Good Friday Agreement is the peace deal between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, part of which means there is an open border between the two countries.
Instead, a regulatory border was set up between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which means inspections on some goods – such as meat, milk, fish and eggs – from England, Scotland and Wales must take place at Northern Irish ports.But the agreement has drawn criticism from unionists who argue that it has created a border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and weakened the province’s place in the UK.
