Darnell Washington has a lot of buzz heading into the 2023 NFLDraft. In a loaded class of TEs, which NFL teams should be specifically targeting Washington?
In a 2023 NFL Draft class that is loaded with talent at the tight end position, GeorgiaWashington is a phenomenal blocker that brings plenty of value in being an extra offensive lineman in any run-blocking scheme. At 6-foot-7 and 265 pounds, he’s also a player that wins in the pass-catching game as a natural mismatch against any defender. He uses that size to create yards after the catch as well, lowering his shoulder and stiff-arming his way through defenders.
Tight end is a position that’s pretty clearly in need of an upgrade in the wake of the Hockenson trade, and Washington could be a great fit. While wide receivers Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown get to work on the outside, Washington would provide quarterback Jared Goff with a big target over the middle. He also wouldn’t stand out as a weak extra blocker on a strong offensive line when asked to stay in-line and block in the run game for backs D’Andre Swift and David Montgomery..
With Uzomah in New York and Hurst in Carolina, the Bengals could use a sturdy replacement at tight end. Washington would bring youth to the position and be a great pass-catching weapon and extra blocker for the Bengals’ offense, even if he starts out as a TE2 behind free agency addition Irv Smith Jr.Former Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki stayed within the division during free agency, ending up in New England on a one-year deal.
With Washington, the Dolphins would get a young tight end that can more than hold his own as a blocker, potentially opening up Smythe for more opportunities as a pass-catcher. They’d also add the depth at the position they’re missing after trading Hunter Long to the Rams as part of the trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Washington could be a great TE2 for Mike McDaniel’s offense and work the middle of the field with the two blazing speedsters—Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle—on the outside.
Washington would bring the Chargers a great dual-threat tight end that could bring the juice in run blocking but also could be a reliable weapon in the passing game. New Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore loved running two tight end sets in his previous job in Dallas, and Darnell Washington, at the very least, could be an excellent TE2 to pair with Everett in Moore’s offense.
