What Apollo 11's Moon landing has in common with your conference call:

Portrait of Neil Armstrong in the Apollo 11 lunar module on the way back to Earth in July 1969.What stuck in the memory of the millions of people who watched the first man stepping foot on the lunar surface on July 21, 1969 wasn’t just the grainy black-and-white images transmitted on their television sets from outer space.

Sound transmission from space to Earth and vice versa occurs by converting sound waves from a person’s voice into radio waves. The seamlessness of the transmission wasn’t just a matter of how well the sound waves of astronauts’ voices could beand thus reach Earth—it was also a matter of how comfortable the headsets would feel to the astronauts, who’d have to wear them for hours at a time.

Larkin had already created radio-equipped sunglasses, so the two friends initially thought to fit a communication device made up of two small transducers, similar to those used in hearing aids, into the bows of the glasses. United Airlines rejected that first design as not all pilots wore glasses when flying, so the two friends went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of connecting the transducers to an acoustic tube shaped as a headband: the MS-50 headset was born.

Plantronics and NASA started working together after astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra spotted one of the MS-50 headsets within a self-contained radio transceiver called a Kellorad unit and wondered whether it could somehow be fitted into his astronaut helmet. , it took only 11 days to develop a working microphone design, in addition to a new noise-canceling feature.
