Sara Eckel's solo years were the best training she could have had for marriage
I didn’t choose to spend the bulk of my adult life unattached. On the contrary, I had always wanted a boyfriend and worked hard to find one – going on internet dates, speed dates, blind dates set up by my mother’s friends. But despite these efforts, I was mostly on my own during my twenties and thirties.
Suddenly, my confidence vanished. Sure, Mark and I were having fun, but what did it mean to live with someone? From what I’d heard from TV talk shows and conversations with friends, ‘the next level’ required an entirely different skill set. Eight years later, Mark and I are married. And to my great surprise and delight, it hasn’t been very hard. In fact, it’s been lovely.
Of course, some compromises are easier to make than others. When Mark and I pooled our assets to buy a house, I wanted a place where I could walk to the shops and his dream home was a quiet cabin in the woods. My frustration almost got the better of me, and I petulantly thought, if I was single, I could just buy the house I wanted. Then I imagined that scene: me, in my perfect house, alone. My anger immediately dissipated.
