Finance officers have been asked to look at more cost cutting measures
West Lothian's head of finance has warned councillors that "urgent action" is needed as he confirmed the council faces an overspend of £3 million on this year's budget.
"This is not a sustainable position", Patrick Welsh, the Interim head of Finance told a meeting of the council Executive.Mr Welsh told the meeting: "The council is forecasting an overspend of £3.5 million compared to budget available and this largely relates to material recurrent pressures within homelessness [services] and a range of measures across Operational services.
Councillor Andrew McGuire, for Labour, said every local authority was in a similar position because of the political choices that had been made by the SNP government. SNP depute group leader Robert De Bold said: "The cuts that we're having to make are a direct consequence of Tory austerity from Westminster."
