Football Insider has learned that West Ham have opened talks with striker Michail Antonio over a new contract following his impressive start to the new season.
sources have told Football InsiderThe 33-year-old’s current deal expires in June 2024 with the Irons holding the option to extend his stay a further 12 months.The Jamaica international was the subject of offers in the summer transfer window, with Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ettifaq the most interested in signing him.
Antonio eventually stayed at West Ham and has had a good start to the new season as the first-choice striker for David Moyes’ side. He remains a key part of the plans for the Irons’ future as they embark on another season of European participation.The veteran forward has scored two goals in five appearances this term.
Antonio is the all-time record goalscorer for the Irons in the Premier League era, notching 63 goals in 233 appearances in the top flight.Danny Ings is the backup striker for Moyes following the big-money exit of Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta in the summer window.West Ham could yet move for a new striker in January despite their successful start to the new campaign.Moyes’ side, who have picked up 10 points from their first five fixtures, face Backa Topola in the Europa League on Thursday .
