After months of anticipation for fans fuelled by snippets of spicy #Halex content to keep us going, Prime Video's adaption of Casey McQuiston's bestsellerDirected by Matthew López, the film follows Alex – the son of America’s first-ever female president– and his complicated relationship with his royal rival across the pond, Prince Henry .
But, while the bones of the story remain pretty much the same, some of the creative liberties López has taken are sure to disappoint some fans. So were these changes for the better, or for worse?Perhaps the biggest change from the book is the erasure of Alex's protective older sister, June . We won't lie, this one stung.
Plus, other than Henry, June seems to be the only other character who truly understands Alex, so it's a shame we weren't able to experience that relationship onscreen.Although Alex's parents are separated in the book, with his father residing in California and his mother happily married to eccentric millionaire Leo , they're still together in the film.but it does mean that one pivotal moment for Alex is left out.
But, with his parents still together and no Christmas conflict to prompt that phone call, we don't get to watch this moment play out on screen.Although Henry's sister Bea is on hand to support him in the film and they do share a heart-to-heart, her role is also largely reduced. In the book, this is exactly what happens. Ellen creates a PowerPoint presentation about what Alex's romance with Henry could mean for her re-election, and she also takes him off her campaign.Ellen does stress that she loves and supports her son "always," but her reaction to his coming out is far more positive and tender in the film. Instead of the presentation, she holds Alex in her arms and they have a heart-to-heart.
Instead, the film introduces us to Miguel, a journalist who appears to be a mix of Rafael and another book character named Liam, who Alex use to fool around with in school.
