Picture the scene. The season is down to the play-offs as a map pops up on screen featuring the competing teams. There are the San Francisco 49ers, sitting proudly on the east coast of the United States. A few hundred miles south are Seattle Seahawks, while on the other side of the country can be found California’s Dallas Cowboys, waiting to do battle with their local rivals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Confused? Many fans and clubs certainly were, with Brentford’s official Twitter account even reworking in jest the fans’ anthem that celebrates the sort of rags-to-riches story Wrexham hope to emulate. “We’re just a bus stop in Hexham,” the club tweeted with a laughing emoji, the north east town of Hexham replacing the west London borough of Hounslow from the fans’ ditty.
