A new resident described the East Hamptons community like this: “There’s Southampton and Bridgehampton and East Hampton. Springs is Your Hampton; it’s what you make of it.”

But when Richard Ziegelasch, his then-partner of just six months, asked him where he might consider moving, he had a quick answer: “Somewhere on the water.”
The parcel they eventually bought for $1.6 million was in Springs, an enclave in East Hampton with sweeping views of Gardiners Bay. It also appealed to the two art collectors as a community known as a haven for artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning and sculptor Costantino Nivola, known best for his New York City public projects. The Springs home of late handbag designer Judith Lieber is now a museum.
Mr. Campion and Mr. Ziegelasch, both 60 years old, own works by area artists Kurt Giehl, Perry Burns, Janet Jennings, Robert Harms and Peter Dayton. They also have paintings by the little-known Elizabeth Scott on display in their ground-floor powder room. The waterfront lot the couple bought in Springs once held the home of Ms. Scott, whose paintings were stashed in the attic of her crumbling studio. The couple razed the cottage when they purchased the 1.2-acre parcel in 2012 and in its place designed and built a 4,200-square-foot, five-bedroom, 5½-bathroom house, complete with infinity pool. The construction cost $2.1 million.
