New study shines light on the impact of cannabis on exercise.
The popular stereotype that surrounds marijuana means the drug is not often associated with exercise and physical activity.
"There is a stereotype that cannabis use leads people to be lazy and couch-locked and not physically active, but these data suggest that this is not the case," Angela Bryan, senior author of the study from Boulder’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, said in a statement. Furthermore, cannabis use is actually banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of its potential to improve sports performance, and there are numerous anecdotal reports indicating that some endurance athletes use cannabis in their training to alleviate nausea and boredom during long runs, the authors note.
The researchers also asked the participants about their reasons for using cannabis with exercise. They found that seventy percent said it increased their enjoyment of exercise, 78 percent said it boosted their recovery and 52 percent said it boosted their motivation. While the team did not test why cannabis may have these effects on people who also exercise, they do offer a speculative explanation.
