'Sprite Fireworks' by nathanmyhrvold 🎇 Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur far above an active thunderstorm. Vote for this photo in the RMetS Weather Photographer of the Year contest! ⚡️

Gesang noticed this colourful cloud when it appeared in the sky over the Sanding Temple in the south of the mountains of Tibet. The beautiful colours lasted for more than 20 minutes and reminded him of a phoenix.

Nathan used an extremely fast telephoto lens, aimed blindly at a spot in the sky where he hoped a sprite might occur and took a repeated series of images. The images were stacked to reduce background noise, and this dramatic picture of luminous reddish-orange flashes dancing in the night sky is the end result.

Showers fall from convective clouds, such as cumulus or cumulonimbus. They tend to be short-lived, localised and can be intense. But showers are often hit and miss, making them tricky to forecast. It can be likened to boiling a pan of water, you know that bubbles will form, but you can’t predict exactly where and when the bubbles will pop up.

Also visible in Dani’s image is a phenomenon known as supernumeraries – the additional, faintly coloured bands on the inner edge of the rainbow . Supernumeraries form when light interacts with uniformly sized raindrops, often relatively small in size.Giulio captured this image on a foggy autumn day from a small church on a hilltop in the town of Airuno, Italy.

In just a couple of hours after taking this photo, Evgeny said the whole lake was covered with white snow and winter came into its own.Chittagong in Bangladesh is characterised by a tropical monsoon climate, with monthly mean temperatures above 19°C in every month of the year. The dry season runs from November to March, the pre-monsoon season from April to May, and the wet season from June to October.

The supercell captured here carried a tornado warning for some time, but it never produced one. However, it did drop baseball-sized hail to the north of Craig’s location, causing significant damage to areas in its path. The bright red sign gave his picture some perspective, showing how high the water was, but he felt he needed something else. Thankfully he spotted a flock of Canadian Geese heading upstream who swam right past him, allowing him to capture this image.

After driving over 300 miles, waiting for eight hours and a half-night sleeping in the car, Serge finally captured this forecasted thunderstorm on a full-moon night over the famous Bay of Cannes in the south of France.
