Celebrity chefs the world over will no doubt be mourning the loss of our famous birds
Lancashire is famous for many things. Slippers were invented here along with Meccano, the kilt, Jelly Babies and even the word 'dinosaur'. And, for the foodies amongst us, it is also home to the Goosnargh duck.
Before we'd even sat down I was quizzing the server as to why on earth they no longer used duck reared on their doorstep. And his answer left me devastated. "They've gone out of business," he told me. The prospect of eating duck was something which presented me with a moral dilemma. I have two pet ducks; Tina and Jemima, and I often joke how they would be a butcher's dream given how fat they are, but I look after them better than I look after myself and would never even contemplate envisaging them on a plate.
I've got to admit, I much prefer unsmoked streaky bacon; it seems to go crispier, and the poached egg was a tad over-cooked, but the black pudding was spot on. I was in no doubt it was from our fair county. Anyone who has no prior experience of Goosnargh duck would, I suspect, have thought it was wonderful. And there wasn't really anything wrong with it. It just wasn't from Goosnargh.
