Editorial: We want 'Mo!' Houston deserves another season of local Netflix series.

In its opening scenes, the homegrown Netflix series"Mo" kind of hits you over the head with its Houston-ness.

But quickly enough the sales pitch settles down and we get into the particulars of Mo Najjar’s life as a Kuwait-born Palestinian refugee, “a refugee free agent” as he calls himself, still trying to pick up the pieces for his family as they await a chance at asylum. The show is billed as a comedy but borrows bits and pieces from Amer’s own life that includes personal tragedy of its own, managing to shift moods as suddenly, and deftly, as a Houston sky before a big downpour.

The story Amer helped create crackles with anxiety, the trauma of Mo’s own family’s history, the omnipresence of ICE, the geopolitical conflict that ripples across conversation in the local hookah spot, and the increasingly perilous consequences of his efforts to stay afloat financially. When Mo and his Mexican American girlfriend get into it, for example, they switch from English to Spanish fluidly.
