The Frisbee has been a staple of the American college campus lifestyle going back as far as the 1970s. And UNC houses not one but two active and healthy ultimate dynasties in the sport. The Frisbee world has been coated in Tar Heel blue.
And the rest of the sport’s collegiate universe doesn’t seem close to closing the gap anytime soon. Pleiades, for example, haven’t lost a match in 1,227 days. The current win streak is at 112 and counting. The last loss came to Carleton College on Feb. 9, 2020.“If I was in anyone else’s shoes, I wouldn’t want the same team to keep winning again and again either,” said Ella Juengst, a former team captain who graduated from UNC this spring. “But, we’ve also just gotten used to it at this point.
Ultimate Frisbee is one of 50 non-NCAA affiliated club sports at UNC. In order to keep the dynasties moving along, students have to pay for flights, jerseys and food out of pocket, but the school’s club sports organization covers hotels and rental cars. There are no scholarships, although in recent years one of the founders of Darkside created an accessibility grant to help athletes who need assistance to travel and participate.
“I really wanted to go to a good school, but I was specifically targeting schools where there was some established ultimate scene,” he said. “Darkside is kind of the golden egg, but that was a differentiating factor from the sea of colleges.” “It’s very symbiotic,” Singleton said. “The biggest thing is how tapped into each other’s goals we are. They are different, obviously. They have to be. But we help each other get there.”
