We tried Umberto's fish and chips causing a stir on Facebook - for the right and wrong reasons
Sitting at the top of this pile, arguably, is Umberto's. It has been a firm favourite chippy in Preston since its launch in 1973.
In the run up to the takeaway's grand opening, new bosses, Richard Fisher-Godwin and his business partner Gavin set up a Facebook page for the new Umberto's Fish Bar. To honour the legacy of the chippy, the owners decided to keep the name but insisted that is the only thing that has remained the same.
I went down to have a look myself with zero expectations other than trying the new take one of my all time favourites. To my surprise, a salt shaker wasn't used, instead, the chef dipped into a tub of salt flakes and sprinkled it on top- a very gourmet touch I'd say. The entire meal was boxed up with no paper packaging in site, no plastic bag and even the curry sauce was served in a cardboard pot- not your typical polystyrene tubs.
The didn't just look crunchy they were crunchy and were full of flavour that you don't get from any other chip shop. Curry sauce is my favourite thing about getting a chippy, it's my go to sauce that I opt for every single time but sadly this one fell short for me because of its sweetness. Again, it did have added flavours in the batter which I can imagine won't be everyone's liking but what impressed me the most was the quality and freshness of the fish. Often I leave bits because they've gone a bit funny or have flaked away too much but not this time.
