Our reporter Keiran Fleming was invited along to a Kelvin Rapids dodgeball training session earlier this week. The club are dreaming big and hope to achieve great things.
My only experience of the sport was the 2004 cult classic Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. So I was surprised when I didn't find a coach in a wheel chair screaming 'if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball' at me.
The Rapids were working on tactical dummy calls during the session, to the uninitiated it seemed completely baffling. Three would have the ball and after a call of 'rouge 1' they'd dash to the line but only the first player would launch the ball the others held and acted as a decoy. It is both fast paced with an element of slow methodical thinking, both your heart and mind is racing all the time. With ball in hand as a player you are constantly thinking about the next move and target, without the ball you are preparing dip, dodge, duck and dive out of the way of a barrage of missiles.
Coach and co-founder Anthony Dow, who represented Scotland at a national level, originally discovered his love for the sport when he gave it a go with friends in his home city of Aberdeen. He decided to start the Glasgow club after moving to the city around three years ago.He told Glasgow Live: "There wasn't a team in Glasgow two years ago and now there are clubs popping up in West Lothian and there are also clubs popping up in Edinburgh that weren't there before.
Although the Kelvin Rapids are merely at the beginning of their time in the sport, Anthony has big dreams for the club."Other teams would pop up but the Aberdeen team has all the experience and the internationalists. I wanted to build a team somewhere else that could compete with them, so that's what I'm aiming to do.
