Cook’s service on the infrastructure committee of Plano ISD’s Future Planning Task Force gave him an important peek under the tent to make such tough decisions ahead. He also serves on the Special Education Board Citizen Advisory Committee and has been involved in several other community organizations.
Ishaq, an information technology consultant who holds a master’s in software engineering from Southern Methodist University, has a commendable history of district service. He currently sits on the Diversity Board Citizen Advisory Committee and has previously served on the 2022 Bond Task Force, the Special Education Board Citizen Advisory Committee and the Career and Technical Education Board Citizen Advisory Committee, among others.
We were impressed with his depth of understanding of district issues, particularly surrounding the mental health needs of students and classroom pressures faced by teachers. But Cook offered us more practical solutions to the most serious issues, such as the teacher shortage. For example, he said offering more day care options for teachers who have children should be part of the district’s recruitment and retention efforts.
Overall, Cook’s emphasis on helping solve the district’s deficit problem, better measuring student achievement and the need for diverse representation on the board to address an increasingly diverse student population are just what the Plano school board needs.
