The EV6 has so far impressed with its strong mix of value, performance, and tech, but we'll see if that impression holds over 12 months.
It's a good cross-section of the current EV landscape in America, and the Kia immediately stands out for its daring design, quick-charging capabilities, surprising agility, and value. This impressive mix helped the EV6 garner heaps of praise from judges at our 2023 SUV of the Year competition,And although it didn't take home the Golden Calipers, it advanced to the finalist round—an impressive feat considering the size and caliber of this year's field.
We're eager to see if those good vibes from SUVOTY remain after we spend the next year probing for possible shortcomings. The relatively stiff suspension is great for handling, but will it be tiresome on commutes and road trips? Will hauling cargo be an issue with the sharply angled rear hatch? And are we really going to let Kia get away with calling the EV6 an SUV? The first two questions should be easy enough to answer, though we may never resolve that last one.
The EV6 Wind is powered by a 77.4-kWh battery and can be had with either a single motor powering the rear wheels or an all-wheel-drive setup with a second motor up the front. We opted for the latter, which is rated at 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque. We wasted no time taking to the track where it ran from 0 to 60 mph 4.4 seconds and finished the quarter mile in 13.2 seconds. Both numbers are 0.
When it came to selecting options, the priciest one we chose was the $1,500 Wind Technology package, which adds a surround-view monitor, remote smart parking assist, a blind-spot monitor, and a parking collision avoidance system. We also opted for a tow hitch , an auto-dimming mirror , carpeted floormats , a cargo cover , and a cargo mat for a grand total of $55,500. With so much tech, features, and thrills behind the wheel, we should have plenty to report on for the next 12 months.
