Everyone thinks they know what life is like on the inside but only those who've lived it can truly know
Life behind bars is something everyone thinks they know about - but what is it really like to spend time in prison?
We want to hear from those who have served jail time on their experiences in our local prisons. It's not something anyone would choose to experience, but prison can play a huge part in peoples' lives and jails are a fundamental part of our justice system. For the vast majority of people, the reality of life on the inside is a mystery. This week, it was reported that two thirds of all prisons in England and Wales are officially overcrowded. HMP Liverpool, which was recently named by the chief inspector of prisons as a jail that "should be shut down," was reported in June to have exceeded its operation capacity according to the data from the Ministry of Justice.
The data showed HMP Altcourse in Fazakerley was also three places off being full, at the time listing 1,161 residents out of a capacity of 1,164. We're asking those who have sampled life on the inside to tell us about their experiences - and help establish how they can work better to help keep all of us safe.
