With its first potential strike since 1989 looming, Akron city and church leaders held a news conference Friday asking Akron Public Schools and the Akron Education Association to make compromises to avoid a strike.
From left, Father Norman Douglas of St. Vincent de Paul Parish; Marco Sommerville, deputy mayor for intergovernmental affairs and senior advisor to the mayor; and Bishop Joey Johnson, founder and senior pastor at House of the Lord, along with Pastor Lorenzo Glenn of Macedonia Baptist Church held a news conference Friday asking the Akron Public Schools and Akron Education Association to work together to avoid a strike.
“We’re here today because we need Akron’s children in school every day,” Marco Sommerville, deputy mayor for intergovernmental affairs and senior advisor to the mayor, said at the news conference. “Education is vital to our children and our community’s future. The work of Akron’s educators is critically important – every school day students miss holds them back. After the interruption of the global pandemic we need to help them catch up, not fall behind.
“I think what we’re doing right here brings some additional pressure to bear so that all parties know that the community is concerned about this,” Bishop Joey Johnson said.
