A deeper look at the financial ramifications from the Mavericks’ two draft-night trades shows how Dallas’ mini-tank and top-10 lottery gamble last season created one of the“I’m generally a happy person, but, no — we’re really excited,” general manager Nico Harrison said late Thursday night. “We feel like we killed the draft.”

Oklahoma City agreed to take on Bertans’ $23 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, but did not send a player in return to match money, so the Mavericks opened a $17 million trade exception — equal to the value of Bertans’ 2023-24 salary. Shedding Bertans’ deal also allowed the Mavericks to unlock a better bonus salary slot in free agency this season.Advertisement
