Ella, 38, and her partner transformed what was once an 'eyesore' 1880s property in Manchester into a quirky, colourful abode
Choosing where to live can be one of the most difficult decisions to make when it comes to buying a house. Not only do you have to take into account factors such as local amenities, transport links and proximity to family and friends, but one of the most important things that will influence your choice of location is affordability.
Ella spoke to the Manchester Evening News as part of our Where I Live series. Each week we chat to a different homeowner about their buying and renovation journey; whilst looking inside to see how they've transformed their house from start to finish. After widening their search, the couple came across a Victorian three-bed semi-detached in the Manchester suburb for £277,000. As they sold their existing house in Altrincham for £264,000, they knew this was a reasonable price. "This was almost the same price as what we sold our house for, but it was much bigger and had a lot more potential," Ella said. "It had a lot of character and it was quirky, but we didn’t really know Northenden at the time.
"It is one of the original houses in the area, it's the oldest on the street. The previous owner had lived in it for about 50 years and it had all been altered to help her as she was an elderly lady, so there were ramps and rails, a stair lift, and a shower in the corner of the bedroom. we had to strip a lot of it back to basics."
Over the next few years the house has undergone an impressive renovation, with almost every room being taken back to brick. “We’ve done a small extension on the front and then we’ve completely changed the layout of the downstairs, so now it's mainly open-plan but we’ve kept a separate living room on one side," Ella said.
With her bold choice of colours and quirky designs, Ella described her interior style as 'eclectic'. "I like lots of different styles, my house is definitely not ultra modern, it is more probably more traditional. I buy things whenever we go travelling so there are a lot of unique items . I’m definitely not afraid of colour and I just love lots of textures and layers."
