Legislation filed by state Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas and state Rep. Ann Johnson of Houston seeks to amend the definition of cremation to include alkaline hydrolysis.
. “The process uses significantly less fuel and has an overall lower carbon footprint than both traditional cremation and burial,” it adds.
Dating back to 1888 as a way to make fertilizer from animal carcasses, the process first saw use in the funerary industry in 2011. The process may take between three to 16 hours, depending on the equipment and the individual’s body mass. “The decomposition that occurs in alkaline hydrolysis is the same as that which occurs during burial, just sped up dramatically by the chemicals,” according to the organization’s website.
“Pure white” bone fragments and a sterile liquid remain after the process, with the latter able to be sent down a drain ”in accordance with federal, state or provincial, and local laws,” the association says on its website.“Because alkaline hydrolysis is not currently legal in Texas, we are forced to send loved ones out of state,” founder of Green Cremation Texas Eric Neuhaus said in a news release.
