Border crisis: Shipping containers used as makeshift border wall
There is $2.5 million worth of steel just sitting in limbo at the border. These were completed sections of wall, now laying worthless because President Joe Biden halted construction of Trump’s border wall the day he took office. Meanwhile, just a few yards away, the state of Arizona is using shipping containers to try and fill gaps in the border wall.
Washington Examiner was given a tour of these shipping containers placed at the border in Yuma, Arizona, from Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines, also the former chairman of the Arizona Republican Party.Lines explained why it is so necessary to fill these gaps in the border wall, saying, “People would be dropped off by buses and then just walk across … and they would come all day long.
"All the material that we need to fill the gaps has been sitting here, in a dormant stage, ever since the day of inauguration," Lines said."There is more than enough constructed wall sections to complete these gaps … but instead, we had to use Conex boxes.” However, right now, the state is battling with courts to keep them in place. The Biden administration is telling Arizona it does not have the authority to place the containers on federal land.
“All the gaps have been filled in. We have a corner section that needs to be completed with the fencing. And then further down, it would be nice to get that closed up as well,” Lines said. Further down is a point of entry where around 850 people are crossing illegally into the country everyday. We spoke to farmers whose lands border the wall. They said illegal immigrants come through their land, stomp their crops, and break into their homes. The shipping containers have helped the situation, but these farmers want the wall finished.
