Brandon Johnson will be inaugurated as Chicago's next mayor on Monday, taking up the mantle from outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Johnson defeated former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas in the April runoff election. Vallas and Johnson advanced to the final battle after beating Lightfoot in the February general election, making her the first incumbent in 40 years to lose reelection. The incoming mayor appealed to voters with his more progressive policy platform focused on comprehensive criminal justice reform and needs-based methods to bolster education.
Right out the gate, Johnson is tasked with appointing Chicago's new police superintendent. As he did not win the support of the Fraternal Order of Police or other police unions, his choice of candidate could define his relationship with law enforcement heading into his four-year term. He made strides in connecting with Illinois lawmakers and leaders immediately following his win in April, discussing the early stages of his time as mayor and meeting with Lightfoot and Gov. J.B. Pritzker . He appointed the Chicago Teachers Union's chief of staff as deputy mayor for education. The union endorsed Johnson and helped secure his win with million-dollar contributions to his campaign.
Johnson will be inaugurated at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, followed by an open house at Chicago's City Hall at 2 p.m.
