The charity is urging people to come forward for advice
As the cost of living rises, many people will be struggling more than ever with bills and other financial responsibilities. Research from the Citizens Advice suggests that around 27% of people in the UK are behind with bills with an average of £28 debt.
As more people try and keep their heads above water, the charity says that 40,000 people are approaching it for help each and every month. Citizens Advice is now calling for reforms to how debt is collected and managed so that people can pay back what they owe in an affordable way. Friday's energy price cap is expected to set a typical annual household bill at about £1,926 from October. But those who contacted Citizens Advice for help had debts averaging £1,711. This is up a third on 2019, the charity said.
