The trend has seen people break child-resistant packaging in order to get 'easier access' to their medicine
Experts have issued a warning against a viral TikTok trend which has seen people tamper with their medicine packaging. Steve Brownett-Gale of pharmaceutical packaging firm Origin, has pointed out the importance of child-safe packaging and how the trend could be dangerous.
"Multi-step mechanisms, such as caps that users must push or squeeze while twisting, for example, are the most common child-resistant packaging on the market, designed to keep curious hands away. However, some TikTokers have taken to the social media platform to promote ‘breaking’ their medication containers to make accessing pharmaceuticals easier."
"Breaking this important packaging safety feature can be disastrous if children get their hands on something they shouldn’t, thinking it’s a toy to play with or worse, a sweet to eat. According to the NHS, medicines are the top cause of hospital admissions for poisoning in under-fives." "Child-resistant closures aren't just about keeping kids out; they also play a role in preserving the medication's quality. Breaking the lid can expose the contents to moisture, air or light, which can degrade the medication's effectiveness."
