Walmart shows it has an edge over Amazon in the intensifying shipping wars
Walmart appears to have the early advantage in the shipping war with Amazon, but both retail giants have only begun to fight. When Amazon reported earnings last month, it blamed the cost of delivering on its one-day shipping promise for weaker-than-expected results, and described its investment in that promise as a “shock to the system.”
Amazon’s stock fell 1.3% after it released its earnings in July, and it has continued to decline from the pre-earnings level since then. The stock is down roughly 12% as the market opened today. with the news that it was rolling out next-day delivery in three states and that it would be able to offer it to 75% of U.S. shoppers by the end of this year.
Walmart is the only U.S. retailer with the size and the resources to aggravate Amazon and so far it is proving to be a nimble adapter as well.Ninety percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store.
