The final issue of The Walking Dead may have wrapped up the storylines of the beloved zombie comic, but also introduced the series' greatest potential threat ever. Image Comics' award-winning survival horror series came to a surprising conclusion after years of developing a devoted fanbase and several multi-platform media adaptations.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Issue #193, the final chapter in co-creator Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead series, resolved its wide-spanning story with an epilogue set 25 years into the future. The issue focused on the remaining survivors of Rick Grimes' former group and their continued attempts to rebuild a new form of civilization from the ruins of the old world.
It's quite telling that the final issue represents a new stage of resurgence for The Walking Dead, while reminding readers that danger always looms in the background of the action. There's a reason that Kirkman has Carl remind his fellow survivors how much of a threat the zombies remain, in the midst of this era of this tranquility.
If the decision had been made to position the Western Alliance as another rival group, there is a chance that they may have been seen as a retread of former villainous groups. But that does not mean the unseen group could pose a threat to the series' surviving characters at another point in time. Whether the Western Alliance proves to be a threat or not, it is only a matter of time before everything The Walking Dead has established comes crashing down.
