The cost of living crisis has forced many landlords to sell
Around 100 private landlords in West Lothian sold up their properties in 2022, it has been reported, as surging energy costs and the cost of living crisis began to bite.
Sarah Kelly, the council’s Housing Needs Manager, told a meeting of the Governance and Risk Committee that compared to neighbouring Edinburgh the council had a more stable relationship with the private sector - but the cost of living crisis had hit the numbers of private let properties right across the county.
Ms Kelly said: “At the end of last year we lost just under 100 private landlords off the register. That equates to 170 properties across the county, an inevitable proportion of those people will end up seeking accommodation from the council.” Ms Kelly pointed to a positive: “In terms of the private sector we do have a relatively healthy private sector because we are not as caught up in the short term let as our colleagues in Edinburgh perhaps are.”
