Opinion | Wadhams: If Ron Hanks and Tina Peters are nominated, GOP can kiss this election goodbye

Wadhams: Colorado’s “Accidental Senator” has certainly had a long-run. Can Republicans mount a real challenge in 2022?

But no! Many Republican “leaders” wrap themselves in self-proclaimed “principle” exclusively defined by fealty to Donald Trump and his almost maniacal obsession with overturning the 2020 presidential election by whatever crackpot theory his legal acolytes can dream up. They disparage any Republican outside their cult of conspiracies as RINOs, “Republicans in name only.”

Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who is running for secretary of state, was recently indicted by a grand jury with criminal charges by a Republican district attorney, and she is also being investigated by the FBI. She kicked a Grand Junction police officer while being arrested. Kind of hard to make the case Republicans are the party of law and order if she is a statewide candidate.

Republican candidate for secretary of state and former Jefferson County Clerk Pam Anderson, who is on the primary ballot, also led the Colorado County Clerks Association, the locally elected public officials on the front lines of conducting elections in 64 counties. Republican Anderson was elected twice in Jefferson County which rejected Trump by 20 points in 2020.

Colorado is terribly close to becoming a one-party state like California, Washington or Oregon. The consequences of one-party rule can be seen in Colorado legislation and ballot questions that coddles criminals, kills the oil and gas industry, drives up consumer energy costs, and wages war on rural Colorado. Hanks and Peters would accelerate this dive to the left, and the loss of even more unaffiliated voter support.
