Vulcans and Betazoids treat telepathy differently.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Both Vulcans and Betazoids possess telepathy in Star Trek, but their abilities take different forms. Throughout Star Trek: The Original Series, the Spock , a half-Vulcan, uses his telepathic abilities several times, most often in the form of a mind meld. Counselor Deanna Troi is also half-Betazoid on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but she can still sense the emotions and thoughts of those around her.

In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 5, "Empathalogical Fallacies," three Betazoid ambassadors visit the USS Cerritos. When the crew begins experiencing uncharacteristic outbursts of emotions, Captain Carol Freeman initially assumes the Betazoids must be the cause. As Betazoids approach middle age, they can contract a virus known as zanthi fever which causes them to project their emotions onto others. Eventually, Lt.

Betazoids can speak with one another telepathically from a young age and can sense the thoughts and emotions of non-telepaths. Both Vulcans and Betazoids can form long-term telepathic bonds with romantic partners, regardless of whether their partner possesses telepathy or not. Counselor Deanna Troi and Commander William Riker have one such bond on TNG, often referring to one another as Imzadi, the Betazoid word for beloved.

Which Star Trek Telepaths Are More Powerful: Vulcans Or Betazoids? While Betazoids may use telepathy more often for simple things like communication, the Vulcans have more powerful telepathic abilities. Telepathy may also come more naturally to Betazoids, but Vulcans can become incredibly powerful telepaths by training their minds. Vulcans can also be determined and even stubborn, which can lead to powerful outbursts of emotion.

While some Betazoids could be very powerful telepaths, both due to genetics and training, they often struggled to block out the cacophony of voices in their mind. Because of this, these Betazoids, such as Tam Elbrun , from TNG season 3, episode 20, "Tin Man," often chose to isolate themselves from society to avoid going mad from hearing everyone's thoughts all the time.
