'If we don’t help, who will do it?' Volunteers collect the dead as Covid-19 devastates Indonesia
BOGOR, Indonesia—A team of volunteers rides to homes in a suburb of Jakarta in a gray Mazda minivan, with a siren on top and its backseat removed to make room for a casket.
Dressed in head-to-toe protective gear, the volunteers knock on doors and greet families before setting to a task that would have been unimaginable to them before the pandemic. They wash bodies of suspected Covid-19 victims with soap and sponges before placing them in plastic body bags and coffins and taking them to the cemetery.
