Days before the press preview of “Figures of Speech,” another Northern Illinois resident joined Abloh for a walkthrough; it was his longtime friend and collaborator Kanye West, who was raised in Chicago. Sitting in a small office space adjacent to the gallery where his life’s work was on display, Abloh mentioned something West said that really struck him. As he explained, “Kanye really taught me something.

Abloh: “Not too much like this exhibition is happening anywhere, let alone a fashion capital like New York or Paris or Milan. It needed to happen with a collective feeling and a community, and there is a strong one here. You also look at the history of this city and the World’s Fair, which obviously had a huge impact on Chicago back in the day.
