ICYMI: The video was disturbing for health reasons but also amplifies disparities in resources for code enforcement, State Rep. Robin Shackleford said.

In the wake of widespread disgust about a video that showed workers at a far east side Indianapolis restaurant preparing food orders from containers on the floor and a mouse scurrying about in the front of the establishment, some community members and lawmakers are calling for Marion County health officials to be more diligent in punishing food businesses with histories of violations.

By Saturday all of the Jordan's signage had been removed and a health department notice of the closure remained on the door. The Marion County Public Health Department attempts to bring into compliance any retail food establishment that has violations, a department spokesman said. “They do not deserve another chance,” Jackson said. “Perpetrators or establishments like the Jordan's at 42nd and Post think it's okay to come into the neighborhood like the one on the far east side and to be deplorable.”The blame does not lie with the county health department, Jackson said. About 30 inspectors are taxed with policing more than 5,000 food establishments. Instead, Jackson said, restaurants need to be held responsible for practices that endanger the health of customers.

Community members say unsanitary conditions at food establishments in their neighborhood is nothing new. A group of Jordanian immigrants opened Indianapolis' first Jordan’s Fish & Chicken restaurant at 7534 Shadeland Ave. in 2004, said Moe Eedous, one of the original owners along with two cousins. Other restaurants owned by Eedous’ family members are found at orderjordansfishchicken.com. They include stores at 5841 Crawfordsville Rd.; 4351 Lafayette Rd.; 7035 E. 96th St.; 404 E. Thompson Rd.; 7003 E. 38th St.; 3681 W. 86th St. in Indianapolis; and 4824 S. Emerson Ave. in Beech Grove. Eedous said a Greenfield location also falls under the umbrella.
