The scouting reports on Victor Wembanyama read like something a kid would create in an NBA2K science lab. Now he’s here. What impact, if any, will his being in San Antonio have on viewership? richarddeitsch with more:
. It’s that simple. Wembanyama is the epitome of a franchise changer. As a teenager, he is leading the French League in rebounds and blocks and is second in points. It’s hard to overemphasize how amazing Wembanyama’s long-term potential is on both ends of the floor. He will immediately be the biggest, longest player in the NBA, which allows him to change the geometry of the court defensively.
In an attempt to educate myself on that question, I spoke this week to ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery Sports executives. They are, unsurprisingly, excited about Wembanyama. Viewers won’t know until mid-August how many national windows the Spurs will get in 2023-24, but it will absolutely be more than last year. The Spurs were seen just four times last season nationally including one appearance on ESPN as well as three games on NBA TV. They had no appearances on TNT.
“Is he a franchise, game-changing, transformational prospect? That’s going to be a story we’re going to document and follow as long as that story is worth telling,” said Dave Roberts, the head of NBA and studio production at ESPN.“He’s a huge story, so I don’t want to understate that,” said Craig Barry, the executive vice president and chief content officer for Turner Sports.
The league’s schedule will come out in mid-August. Media partners traditionally get a first scheduling draft in early summer, and then the schedule gets tweaked based on back-and-forth conversations with ESPN and WBD. Matt Kenny, ESPN’s vice president of programming and acquisitions, understandably did not want to give specifics into ESPN’s asks with the league but acknowledged in broad strokes that both entities are in the business of maximizing viewership.
“We have an incredible relationship with the league,” Kenny said. “We talk regularly about all aspects of our business, including scheduling. We’re very well aligned with them on all things scheduling-related. So we will have a number of conversations with them to determine the best approach for the season as a whole, and certainly the Spurs will be part of that.”One of the age-old questions when it comes to where a star player ends up is whether media market size ultimately matters.
