Since then, the Rebels have made it to the semifinals three times, but haven’t advanced to the finals. Twice Vestavia Hills didn’t make it out of area play into the playoffs and four times the Rebels were ousted in the first round. Nine AHSAA blue map championship trophies cast a pretty big shadow on players – and coaches – at Vestavia.
“We tell them ‘you don’t have to be somebody you’re not.’ I’m not trying to be Coach Dunn because I’m certainly not him.”“I’m a baseball guy and so you have to love what Vestavia was able to do in the ‘90s,” he said. “We have already talked to our players about it. The nine championships they won with Sammy Dunn, they were the first team that really took baseball seriously, to win that many in a row was unheard of. It has not been done again.
“We all have played there growing up in tournaments at Hoover that had games at Vestavia. We know about their championships, but we think we should be a part of that conversation.” “He can really locate his fastball to either side and has an above average curve and change-up. He doesn’t rely on just throwing in the upper 80s, he can actually pitch.”
Mitchell and the fourth-ranked 35-8 Patriots will face some formidable competition from 22-15 Vestavia Hills. “Walburn has caught a ton of games for us,” Harris said. “We had some injuries so he had to catch more than anticipated and he’s played well and even played through some injuries that he had.
