DeLeon’s conviction was overturned in 2019 due to the work former Brooklyn Detective Louis Scarcella used to obtain the confession.in the case by the end of the month — the first decision after a retrial involving a tossed conviction and Scarcella, according to The Associated Press. Scarcella was once hailed as an invaluable NYPD star known for helping to win convictions in the midst of a homicide epidemic in the 1990s. The now-retired detective, who has defended his aggressive tactics amid the wave of citywide violence at the time, said he doesn’t even remember being involved in DeLeon’s case.
