Record-breaking temperatures are expected across California Thursday and Friday with the mercury rising up to 25 to 30 degrees above normal.

for the date on April 6."With upcoming heat wave, it's starting to seem possible that vast majority of snowpack could be gone by mid-late April.

David Rizzardo, chief of hydrology for California's Department of Water Resources, agreed the snowpack could be mostly gone by the end of the month, noting that the snow will disappear in the northern Sierra first. "With the expected heat we should see the bulk of the remaining snow in our Northern Sierra watersheds melt out in the next few weeks," Rizzardo wrote in an email."A little longer for the Central and Southern Sierra since the mountains have higher elevations."

The snowpack has historically provided about a third of the state's water supply. It typically replenishes rivers and reservoirs through the summer, but this year the snow melt is happening earlier than usual. Temperatures in Northern California are forecast to peak Thursday with inland areas breaking into the 90s, while Southern California will see the hottest temperatures on Friday when the mercury is likely to rise above 100 degrees. The Tahoe Basin is expected to see temperatures in the high 60s on Thursday and Friday.
