The number of vaping-related lung injury cases has topped 2,500 nationwide.

As of December 17, there were 2,506 hospitalized cases of lung injury linked to vaping in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.Vaping injuries have been reported in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

"We predict that next year that awareness that vaping of THC is associated with these acute lung injuries may lead to actually a reduction of vaping among teenagers," Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, previously told CNN."We will find out," she said.CNN's Jamie Gumbrecht contributed to this report.
