The league, which has come close to the Pony World Series the last two years, will announce all-stars after Monday's title game
Vanderbilt third baseman Derek Nall tags out a North Carolina runner, watering down a third straight single that tied the game at 6-6 in the fourth. The play went 8-2-5.One would never expect a youth baseball game that has two lead changes to finish the way it did Sunday afternoon. But then it suddenly dawned on Vanderbilt, one of three teams that has been jockeying for first place at the NASA Pony League all spring, it needs to be in the grand finale.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. back at Bay Area Park. NASA Pony, which has come oh so close to a trip to the World Series in Pennsylvania the last two years, is scheduled to announce its 14-year-old and 13-year-old all-stars after the game.North Carolina, which held a 5-4 advantage as late as the third inning, appeared to run out of pitching as a 15-hit attack overwhelmed the Tar Heels. But North Carolina finished with nine hits itself, accumulated by seven different players.
Vanderbilt was led in the hitting department by John Brooks, Derek Nall, Blankenship and Gavin Smith. That group combined for 11 hits. But doubles by Blankenship and Brooks helped produce that second lead change. North Carolina would tie it in the fourth on Morin's second consecutive single, but then three North Carolina pitchers were roughed up for the final 10 runs.
